Introduction to Defensive Shotgun 

Introduction to Defensive Shotgun will start you down the path to understanding the shotgun and its role in our protective system. Our experience instructors will guide you through the different types of shotguns, gauge size and understanding the anatomy of a shotgun shell, choke constrictions and patterning, assembly and disassembly of your shotgun, cleaning, maintenance, and how a shotgun functions. Once students have a basic understanding of the workings of a shotgun, they will progress with instruction to proper stance, mounting the shotgun, and loading and unloading procedures. This course will conclude with lecture on the development of a proper protective mindset, how a shotgun can be effectively integrated into your protective system, and familiarization fire of your shotgun. 

PREREQUISITE: None 

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: 

  • Reliable Shotgun – Pump, Semi-Auto, Over/Under or Side x Side – 12ga, 20ga, or .410ga 

  • Cleaning Equipment (Optional) 

  • Ear and Eye Protection 

  • Rugged Clothes and Shoes or Boots 

  • Note Taking Material 

  • Ammunition Requirements 

  • 25 Rounds of Birdshot

Defensive Shotgun I 

This class with introduce the student to the versatile use of the shotgun in your protective system. The shotgun is a devastating weapon for protective use, if you have the knowledge, skill, and mindset to employ it within the constraints of its effectiveness. Topics covered: Protective Mindset, shotgun and accessory selection, ammunition considerations, safety concerns, strength and weakness of the shotgun, loading and ammunition change out, patterning with a variety of loads, ready positions and employing your shotgun, while utilizing the environment to maximize a shotgun’s effectiveness. 

Students will be tested and evaluated on the use of the shotgun, giving students the ability practice on their own.

  • Reliable Shotgun – Pump, Semi-Auto, Over/Under or Side x Side 

  • Side Saddle or Shell Holder 

  • Sling (Not Mandatory) 

  • Pistol with Magazines (Not Mandatory) 

  • Belt, Holster and Magazine Holder (Not Mandatory) 

  • Rugged Clothing and Shoes 

  • Ear and Eye Protection 

AMMUNITION: 

  • 125 Rounds of Birdshot

Defensive Shotgun II 

Defensive Shotgun II picks up where Defensive Shotgun I left off, with the continued education in the Gospel of the Gauge. Introduction to slug usage and how their employment fits into our protective system. Slug zeroing and buckshot patterning, slug select drills and application of precise fire will broaden the students understanding of the effective capabilities of the shotgun. This coursework will continue to build on previous skills learned, with an increased level of complexity to challenge the student, building increased confidence and proficiency, while coupling it with proper protective mindset and applied tactics. 

Students will be tested and evaluated on the use of the shotgun, giving students the ability practice on their own.
